Here are some screenshots from the Pokemon Crystal game.

Unlike Pokemon Gold & Silver, you can choose to be a girl trainer. Like GS, you can choose to start with Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile. Messages are written on the floors of Ruins of Alph.

Messages are also written on the walls. This one says "HO-OH". Hmm... Wonder where that leads to? Here is just outside the new building called "Battle Tower".
