01Overview
Meet Diglett
Everything you need to know about the Mole Pokémon — the creature behind the number.
Diglett may be the most famous head in the Pokémon world. The Mole Pokémon pops out of the ground as a small brown dome with two beady black eyes and a big, round pink nose – and that is all anyone ever gets to see. Officially it's the shortest and lightest Ground-type of all, just 20 centimetres tall, though even that only measures the part sticking out of the soil: the Pokémon Stadium Pokédex cheerfully admits that its real size remains a mystery.
Diglett live about a yard underground, tunnelling at a shallow depth and leaving a tell-tale ridge of raised earth behind them. They are creatures of the dark. Their skin is so thin that sunlight heats their blood and leaves them weak, so they keep their heads down while the sun is bright and often surface only after dark. Down below they chew on plant and tree roots, and they'll happily set up home in caves or in the tunnels left behind by burrowing Onix.
“It burrows through the ground at a shallow depth. It leaves raised earth in its wake, making it easy to spot.”
Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed & Shield · 1996
All that digging makes Diglett a farmer's best friend – or worst enemy. Wherever it burrows, the soil is left perfectly tilled for planting, and its droppings enrich the earth, so many farms raise Diglett on purpose. Some growers even plant the trees Diglett love to eat around their crops to tempt them into ploughing the fields for free. Others curse the little moles for nibbling the very vegetables they help to grow.
Diglett has been burrowing since Pokémon Red and Green, where a colony of Diglett and Dugtrio dug Diglett's Cave, the long tunnel linking Route 2 near Pewter City with Route 11 on the edge of Vermilion City. Its designer, Shigeki Morimoto, has said he dreamt it up as a little kid, and its pop-up-and-vanish act owes plenty to the moles of Whac-A-Mole arcade machines. At level 26 it evolves into Dugtrio.
Fans have spent decades wondering what lies beneath the dirt line. The games love to tease: a Diglett in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon casually mentions its feet, and moves like Scratch and Slash hint at hidden claws. Even Alola, whose iron-rich volcanic soil gave its Diglett three gleaming golden whiskers, kept the secret firmly buried. The rest of a Diglett has never been shown – and that, really, is the charm.
How big is Diglett?

Diglett stands just 0.2 m (0′08″) out of the ground – about the height of a 500 ml bottle of water – and weighs 0.8 kg (1.8 lb), a little less than a bag of sugar, while Alolan Diglett tips the scales at exactly 1 kg (2.2 lb).
Evolution
Alolan Diglett
Alola form · since Sun & Moon (2016) · Mole Pokémon
Alola's Diglett grew up in the islands' iron-rich volcanic ground, and it shows. After living in that metal-heavy soil, they sprouted three fine golden whiskers from the tops of their heads and became Ground/Steel-types – and having to dig through solid volcanic rock has made them tougher than the Diglett of any other region. Its official artwork paints its body and nose a darker, warmer brown than the Kanto original, and the dark soil around it calls to mind the black-sand beaches that form near volcanoes.
Those whiskers are hard-working hair. They act as sensors, so an Alolan Diglett can poke them out of its burrow and keep an eye on the world above without ever showing its face. They double as a way of talking, too: the hairs stand on end when it's angry, sway when it's happy and droop when it's sad. Its tunnels leave the volcanic ground soft enough to farm, and the people of Alola are grateful for it – on Akala Island, Diglett and people even worked side by side to finish digging Diglett's Tunnel, the passage that links Heahea City with Route 9.

Alolan Diglett’s Pokédex entries
Its head sports an altered form of whiskers made of metal. When in communication with its comrades, its whiskers wobble to and fro.
Its golden hairs function as sensors. It pokes them out of its burrow to monitor its surroundings.
Although it's powerful enough to dig right through volcanic rock, it doesn't allow itself to be seen very often.
The need to dig through volcanic rock in the ground has made them more powerful than the Diglett of other regions.
After living in soil with high iron content for some time, three steel whiskers sprouted from the top of its head.
The metal-rich geology of this Pokémon's habitat caused it to develop steel whiskers on its head.
Its three hairs change shape depending on Diglett's mood. They're a useful communication tool among these Pokémon.
The things growing from its head are whiskers that have become metallic. Diglett communicates with its comrades by waving them.
Its golden whiskers function as sensors. It pokes them out of its burrow to monitor its surroundings.

Base stats
Diglett's base stats have never changed: 10 HP, 55 Attack, 25 Defense, 35 Sp. Atk, 45 Sp. Def and a nippy 95 Speed, a total of 265. In Red, Green, Blue and Yellow it had a single Special stat of 45; when Gold and Silver split Special in two, Sp. Def kept the 45 and Sp. Atk dropped to 35. Alolan Diglett keeps the same 265 total but trades 5 points of Speed for 5 extra Defense (30 Defense, 90 Speed), and its 10 HP and 30 Defense are the lowest of any Steel-type. Diglett's base experience yield was 81 in Generations I–IV and has been 53 since Generation V, and its base friendship was 70 from Generation II to Generation VII and has been 50 since Generation VIII. Spin-offs & cameos
Super Smash Bros.
Diglett itself has never popped up in Super Smash Bros. – no fighter slot, no Poké Ball, no trophy, no spirit – so its evolution has had to fly the family flag. Dugtrio is a collectible trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and pokes out of the ground in the background of the Pokémon Stadium 2 stage. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate it becomes spirit No. 432, a one-star Novice support spirit that grants Electric Resist ↑ – a cheeky nod to Ground-types shrugging off electricity. Win it on the Spirit Board, where you face a trio of orange Kirby (one for each head), or simply buy it from the Vault Shop for 500G.
Pokémon GO
Diglett has been popping out of Pokémon GO's map since launch day, 6 July 2016, and evolves into Dugtrio for 50 Candy, earning a Candy every 3 km as a buddy. Alolan Diglett arrived worldwide on 14 July 2018, alongside Alolan Geodude, during Pokémon GO Fest 2018 – it shares the same Diglett Candy. Shiny Diglett surfaced on 29 April 2019 for Earth Day, and the shiny Alolan form followed on 28 June 2019 during the game's third-anniversary celebrations. Team GO Rocket Grunts began using Shadow Diglett on 12 October 2020, and Shadow Alolan Diglett appeared on 14 November 2022. Diglett starred in a Spotlight Hour on 11 January 2022 and, for Fashion Week 2022, put on a fashionable costume and became a one-star raid boss from 27 September to 8 October 2022. In battle it digs in with Mud-Slap or Scratch backed by Dig, Mud Bomb or Rock Tomb, while Alolan Diglett can use Metal Claw and, since 1 March 2024, Sand Attack. And a lovely touch: since a 2020 update, a Diglett stays planted in the ground while it evolves into Dugtrio.
Its Base Set card, complete with Dig and Mud Slap, is one of the cards you can collect and duel with in the Game Boy adaptation.
Keep your lens on the ground in the Tunnel course, where Diglett is one of the Pokémon waiting to be snapped.
Catch it at Rock Mountain on either table. On the Red Field, Diglett pop up to be bashed for points, and their own bonus stage has you knocking out every Diglett before a Dugtrio rises to face you.
Diglett joins the 3D battles, and the game's Pokédex admits that while its head pokes about eight inches out of the ground, its real size remains a mystery.
Back in 3D battle, with a Pokédex that shows its thin-skin entry or its field-tilling one depending on which Game Boy game is plugged in.
The Base Set Diglett card returns in the Japan-only sequel to the Game Boy card game.
A common piece in Phobos Drill, Endless Level 30, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den.
Your third story mission is to rescue a Diglett stranded on Mt. Steel; afterwards it hangs around the Pelipper Post Office, and its dad, Dugtrio, is its hero. Wild ones can be recruited in Southern Cavern and Joyous Tower and settle in the Boulder Cave friend area.
Burrows through Krokka Tunnel, and its Browser entry notes that it sometimes rests with just its head poking out.
A member of Wigglytuff's Guild whose main job is sentry duty: it examines every visitor's footprints to work out who they are. Its father Dugtrio appears too, and wild Diglett can be recruited in Shimmer Desert (1F–9F).
Back on sentry duty at Wigglytuff's Guild, and still recruitable in Shimmer Desert.
One of the Pokémon Pikachu can befriend in the Cavern Zone.
A shy resident of the Crag Area that dives out of sight in a flash – even though it secretly wants to be friends with everyone in PokéPark.
Found in Stage 1 of the Safari Jungle – but only on Tuesdays.
Diglett waits in Prasino Woods (Stage 569) with the Stabilize+ skill, while Alolan Diglett, armed with Rock Break+, appeared in a Pokémon Safari event.
Lives in Fairy Land's Heat-Wave Desert and the Sky Crest Range in Legend Terrain.
Joins the Connection Orb once you complete its item-delivery job, linking up with Dugtrio, Skarmory and Chimecho.
In the wild since launch day, joined by Alolan Diglett in July 2018; both forms have Shiny, Shadow and raid appearances, and a fashionable costume arrived in 2022.
Diglett roams the Charizard, Zapdos, Celebi, Lugia and Bulbasaur Seas, while Alolan Diglett turns up in the Zygarde Sea.
Hatches from Eggs during the Ground- and Fighting-type Egg Event and the 2024 Three-Type Egg Event, partnering your own player character.
A group of Diglett digs a tunnel from the Pelipper Post Office all the way to your home, giving you a handy shortcut between the two. Recruitable again in Southern Cavern and Joyous Tower.
Snap it in the Barren Badlands, where its Photodex entry notes that it shelters in holes left by burrowing Onix.
A Snoozing-type Ingredients specialist that gathers Figy Berries, brings Snoozy Tomatoes, Large Leeks and Greengrass Soybeans, and uses Charge Strength S. It dozes in Underground, Aboveground and Mid-Dig styles on Greengrass Isle, Cyan Beach, Taupe Hollow and Old Gold Power Plant – and catching one asleep above ground is said to be lucky.
Listed as No. 154 in Pokopia's Pokédex, which borrows Yellow's line about Diglett preferring dark places.
Moves
Diglett has always known exactly what it is good at. In Red and Green its whole level-up list would fit on a postcard, with Scratch, Growl, Dig, Sand-Attack, Slash and a level-40 Earthquake, but that was plenty for a tiny mole to shake the whole battlefield. Gold and Silver added the wobbly power of Magnitude and made Fissure its grand finale, and Diamond and Pearl nearly doubled the list with Mud Bomb, Earth Power and a sneaky Sucker Punch for popping up out of nowhere.
Sun and Moon then dug up a real surprise: Alolan Diglett, a Ground/Steel cousin that swaps Scratch for Metal Claw and Slash for Iron Head and later picks up Flash Cannon, Iron Defense and Steel Beam. Sword and Shield retired Magnitude and Mud Bomb and slotted in Sandstorm, while Scarlet and Violet handed both forms their biggest toolbox yet, with Swords Dance, Stone Edge and, at long last, Sand Tomb. Whatever the generation, the recipe never changes: dig down, pop up and bring the ground with you.
Signature moves
The move Diglett was born for. It learned Dig at level 19 in Red and Blue, when the move hit for a mighty 100 power, and Dig has been on every Diglett level-up list since, from level 17 in Gold and Silver to 32 in Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet.
Huge power from a tiny mole: Earthquake arrives at level 40 in Red and Blue and has sat at or near the top of every level-up list since, as early as level 29 in Let's Go. It has been a Diglett TM favourite from TM26 onwards, too.
Gold and Silver's brand-new quake of random strength, learned at level 9 there and a Diglett staple for six generations, until Sword and Shield dropped the move altogether.
Pocket sand, mole style. It was a level-24 move in Red and Blue (as Sand-Attack, then still a Normal-type move) and has been a level-1 opener from Ruby and Sapphire onwards, bar level 4 in Let's Go.
The ultimate burrowing trick, a one-hit KO that was TM27 in Red and Blue and has been the grand finale of Diglett's level-up list ever since Gold and Silver: level 49 there, 44 in Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet.
Perfect for a Pokémon that pops out of the ground without warning: Diamond and Pearl's new priority strike, learned at level 23 there and on every list since, with 70 power from Sun and Moon onwards.
The steely Alolan form's own touch: outside Let's Go it starts with Metal Claw in place of Scratch and learns Iron Head where Kantonian Diglett learns Slash, at level 35 in Sun and Moon and 24 in Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet.

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow6 level-up · 15 TM/HM
Diglett pops up in Diglett's Cave, the long tunnel between Route 2 and Route 11 near Vermilion City, in Red, Blue and Yellow alike. Its six-move level-up list is short but punchy: Scratch, then Growl at 15, Dig at 19, Sand-Attack at 24, Slash at 31 and a level-40 Earthquake. Dig hits for a hefty 100 power in these games, Sand-Attack is still a Normal-type move, and every attack's physical or special category simply follows its type. The TM case adds Fissure, Rock Slide, Body Slam and Double-Edge, and Yellow alone lets Diglett learn HM01 Cut. One move can come back from Gold and Silver through the Time Capsule: Screech, which Diglett can learn there as an Egg Move.

Generation II · Gold, Silver & Crystal8 level-up · 21 TM/HM · 5 egg
Gold, Silver and Crystal keep Diglett at home in Kanto's Diglett's Cave. Its list stretches to eight moves: Growl now comes at level 5, the brand-new Magnitude at 9, Dig at 17, a newly Ground-type Sand-Attack at 25 and Slash at 33, with Earthquake at 41 and Fissure as the level-49 finale. Dig drops to 60 power, and HM01 Cut is open to Diglett in all three games. Breeding brings five Egg Moves: Beat Up from Sneasel, Faint Attack from parents such as Meowth, Sneasel and Houndour, Pursuit from Rattata, Tauros, Umbreon or Dunsparce, Screech, and AncientPower, which has to be chain-bred through Wooper or Quagsire. Categories still follow type, so Mud-Slap and Sludge Bomb count as physical and Thief as special. Eight old TM moves from Red, Blue and Yellow, including Body Slam, Rock Slide and Take Down, can be carried forward through the Time Capsule.

Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald have no wild Diglett at all, so it has to be traded in, while FireRed and LeafGreen put it straight back in Diglett's Cave. The two pairs share one level-up list with a single difference: only FireRed and LeafGreen teach Fury Swipes, at level 21. Sand-Attack now comes right at the start and Mud-Slap arrives at 25. The seven Egg Moves include AncientPower from Kecleon, Rock Slide from Camerupt and Uproar from Whismur and its evolutions, Vigoroth or Spinda. Emerald's tutors teach Diglett ten moves, from Body Slam and Double-Edge to Mud-Slap and Swagger, FireRed and LeafGreen five, and a Diglett traded into Pokémon XD can pick up five more there. Rock Tomb, Aerial Ace, Facade and Secret Power join the TM list, Rock Smash becomes HM06, and categories still follow type, so Sludge Bomb is physical while Faint Attack and Pursuit are special.

Generation IV · Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver13 level-up · 29 TM/HM · 10 egg · 4 tutor
Diamond, Pearl and Platinum save Diglett for the post-game, on Route 228 in the Battle Zone. HeartGold and SoulSilver bring back Diglett's Cave and add the Johto Safari Zone, and older Diglett can join through Pal Park's Mountain area. The level-up list nearly doubles to 13 moves, with Astonish at 7 and three brand-new moves, Sucker Punch at 23, Earth Power at 26 and Mud Bomb at 29, while Earthquake comes as early as 37 and Fissure at 40. Every move now has its own category, so Earth Power, Mud Bomb and Mud-Slap become special, and Dig climbs to 80 power. Astonish and Mud Bomb join the Egg Moves, with Reversal in HeartGold and SoulSilver only, and Stealth Rock, Shadow Claw and Sandstorm turn up as TMs. The tutors of Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver teach Earth Power, Mud-Slap, Snore and Sucker Punch, while Body Slam, Double-Edge, Mimic and FireRed and LeafGreen's Fury Swipes can only be carried over from Generation III.

Generation V · Black, White, Black 2 & White 214 level-up · 27 TM/HM · 13 egg · 5 tutor · 2 event
There are no wild Diglett in Unova: Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 can only receive one through Poké Transfer, although the Dream World's Icy Cave offers a Diglett that can know Beat Up or Stealth Rock. The level-up list is reshuffled into 14 moves, with Mud-Slap at 12, Magnitude at 15, the new Bulldoze at 18, Dig pushed back to 34 and Fissure as the level-45 finale. Hone Claws, Round, Echoed Voice and Bulldoze join the TMs, and Rock Smash becomes TM94. Breeding grows to 13 Egg Moves, adding Endure, Final Gambit, Headbutt and Memento, and Uproar now hits for 90 power. Black and White have no tutor moves for Diglett; the tutors of Black 2 and White 2 teach Earth Power, Sleep Talk, Snore, Stealth Rock and Uproar.

Generation VI · X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire14 level-up · 31 TM/HM · 13 egg · 3 tutor
X and Y have no wild Diglett, so the only way to get one there is to hatch it from an Egg laid by a Dugtrio. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire hide it in the Fiery Path, where the DexNav can find it once Groudon or Kyogre has been caught or defeated. The level-up list is unchanged, apart from Sand-Attack now being spelled Sand Attack. Sleep Talk becomes TM88 and Confide TM100, and TM94 teaches Rock Smash in X and Y but Secret Power in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where Rock Smash moves to HM06. Rock Tomb improves to 60 power and Thief to 60 power with 25 PP. The Egg Moves stay the same, with Faint Attack renamed Feint Attack and AncientPower now Ancient Power, and only Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have tutors for Diglett: Earth Power, Snore and Stealth Rock.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon14 level-up · 25 TM/HM · 13 egg · 4 tutor · + Alolan Diglett
Alola has a Diglett of its own. The Ground/Steel Alolan Diglett lives in spots such as Verdant Cavern and Diglett's Tunnel, while the familiar Kantonian Diglett can only reach Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon through Pokémon Bank. Both forms follow the same 14-move pattern, with Mud-Slap at 10, Magnitude at 14 and Earthquake at 39, but Alolan Diglett starts with Metal Claw instead of Scratch and learns a level-35 Iron Head where its cousin learns Slash. Sucker Punch drops to 70 power. Alolan Diglett adds Work Up and Flash Cannon to the shared TM list, and its Egg Moves trade Astonish, Mud Bomb, Screech and Uproar for Metal Sound (from Lucario) and Thrash. The Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon tutors teach both forms Earth Power, Snore, Stealth Rock and Stomping Tantrum, with Iron Defense and Iron Head for Alolan Diglett only; Sun and Moon have none. Fourteen older moves, from Rage and Bide to Hone Claws and Rock Smash, can only be brought in by Kantonian Diglett from earlier generations.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield, Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl13 level-up · 55 TM/HM · 15 egg · 1 tutor · + Alolan Diglett
Kantonian Diglett is part of Galar from the start, popping up on Route 4, in the Galar Mine and in the Wild Area's Rolling Fields and Giant's Mirror, plus Max Raid Battles at Bridge Field and Rolling Fields. Alolan Diglett can only be traded into Sword and Shield, but the Expansion Pass hides 150 of them around the Isle of Armor, and finding every last one earns you an Alolan Diglett of your own. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl bring Kantonian Diglett back to Route 228; Alolan Diglett cannot be obtained there, and neither form appears in Legends: Arceus. Kantonian Diglett has the same level-up list in all four games: Magnitude and Mud Bomb are gone, Astonish moves to 8, Bulldoze to 16 and Sucker Punch to 20, and Sandstorm joins at 28, ahead of Dig at 32, Earth Power at 36, Earthquake at 40 and Fissure at 44. Sword and Shield teach 18 TMs and 13 TRs, with Screech, Assurance, Beat Up and Stomping Tantrum among the TMs and Earth Power, Stealth Rock, Reversal and Ally Switch among the TRs, while Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl go back to a 24-move Sinnoh-style TM list with Cut and Rock Smash as ordinary TMs. The Egg Moves shrink to five in Sword and Shield (Ancient Power, Final Gambit, Headbutt, Hone Claws and Memento); Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl keep ten. The Expansion Pass tutor teaches Scorching Sands. Feint Attack, Pursuit, Return, Hidden Power and several other older moves on the transfer lists cannot be used in Sword and Shield.

Diglett in the anime
Debut EP031Dig Those Diglett! · Its appearances on screen, and 3 other trainers who raised one.
Diglett tunnelled into the anime in Dig Those Diglett! (EP031), and it arrived as a troublemaker with a cause. A whole colony of Diglett and Dugtrio kept wrecking a dam project, and not one Trainer's Pokémon would come out to fight them. Fair enough, as it turned out, because the moles were planting the very forest the dam would have flooded. Since then the species has been a reliable scene-stealer: a rancher's herd that tunnelled a town's Electrode to safety (EP114), the namesake Pokémon of Diglett Village and its yearly mock raid (EP218), a burrowing helper for the Pokémon Ranger Solana (AG155), and the model for several of Team Rocket's digging machines.
Alola gave it a golden makeover. Alolan Diglett popped up in the Pokémon School's yard (SM017), sang its way into DJ Leo's act as Dugtrio's apprentice (SM023) and dug the pit that swallowed Ash in a cave (SM035). In Pokémon Journeys, Goh caught one after a crop-munching herd ran riot on Laxton Farm (JN052), and the moles are still popping up everywhere from Pokémon Horizons to the Pokémon Resort of Pokémon Concierge. Ash himself has never caught one.
Other trainers’ Diglett

First seen: SM023Getting the Band Back Together!
Now: Performing with DJ Leo and his Alolan Dugtrio
DJ Leo, Professor Kukui's childhood friend, performed as the duo Dug-Leo with his Alolan Dugtrio, and one wild Alolan Diglett was their biggest fan. It popped up at the concert to admire Rotom's wig, then bopped Rotom, swiped the wig and bolted, sending Ash and friends on a chase. Later it surfaced from the sand at Leo's home and sang for Dugtrio, which liked the voice so much that it agreed to be the youngster's mentor, and Kukui crowned the new recruit with Rotom's wig. When Team Rocket, disguised as talent agents, talked Dugtrio into going solo and then tied it up in a mountain hut, it was Diglett that untied the ropes, and the reunited act, renamed Dig-Dug-Leo, took the stage together on the concert's second day (SM023). Diglett was at Leo's side again when he provided the music for Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet's wedding (SM055).
Personality
A starstruck superfan with a genuinely good singing voice and a cheeky streak. Before it was a performer, it was the Pokémon that bopped Rotom and ran off with its wig.

First seen: JN052How Are You Gonna Keep 'Em Off of the Farm?
Goh's Diglett started out as one of a crop-raiding gang. A Dugtrio was marshalling a herd of Diglett through the carrot fields of Laxton Farm, run by a former student of Professor Cerise, and the moles were far too quick to catch, until Chloe took charge from a balcony and directed Ash and Goh around the field with flags. Goh caught a Diglett as it surfaced, then bagged the ringleader Dugtrio as well, and it turned out that Team Rocket's blaring music had driven the herd off their hillside home in the first place (JN052). Goh handed Dugtrio to Laxton, who happily took the rest of the herd on as farmhands, but kept Diglett, which later joined the team of Goh's Pokémon that dug Grimer a new pool in Cerise Park (JN107).

First seen: EP114The Underground Round Up
Poncho is a Diglett rancher with more than a hint of Clint Eastwood about him, and he carries far more than six Pokémon. Hired to rid a town on Hamlin Island of the Electrode that kept blowing up around it, he chose a gentler solution than the Mayor: he threw out a handful of Poké Balls and released Diglett everywhere. They dug holes beneath the Electrode so they could explode safely underground, then carved out a great tunnel to roll them away to open land where they could live in peace. When the Mayor's office fired him and put Team Rocket and their Electrode Eliminator in charge, Poncho's Dugtrio opened up a massive hole under the machine, and the Diglett turned the stampede of Electrode into a conveyor belt that swept the villains away. Poncho rounded things off by taking Ash and friends up in his Diglett hot-air balloon to watch the Electrode reach their new home (EP114).
Ash & Diglett
Ash has never caught a Diglett, and his first meeting with them was a lesson in humility: at the dam site in Dig Those Diglett!, his Squirtle, like every other Trainer's Pokémon there, refused to leave its Poké Ball to fight them (EP031). Alola was no kinder. An Alolan Diglett's pit swallowed him in a cave (SM035), and another popped up to trip him face-first into the mysterious giant that turned out to be Stakataka (SM085). The nearest he has come to having one on the team was watching his friend Goh catch one on Laxton Farm (JN052).
Featured episodes
- EP031Dig Those Diglett!A colony of Diglett and Dugtrio keeps cracking the ground under a dam construction site, so the foreman offers a hot-spring stay to any Trainer who can drive them off. Gary and a crowd of Trainers turn up, but not one of their Pokémon will leave its Poké Ball to fight. That night Pikachu leads Ash and friends to the truth: the moles are planting trees on the mountainside. When Team Rocket's freshly evolved Arbok and Weezing tunnel in, the Diglett and Dugtrio strike from below and whip up a wave of mud that sweeps the villains away and bursts the dam wall, and the foreman, realising the dam would have flooded the forest, calls the project off.
- EP218Plant It Now… Diglett LaterAfter tumbling into pitfalls on the road to Transit Town, Ash and friends are led by Diglett to Diglett Village, where the Diglett help the elderly villagers plant their crops. The village is bracing for its yearly raid by the Band of Diglett thieves, armoured riders on Dodrio who threaten to steal the precious Diglett. But the 'thieves' turn out to be the village's own young people and the Mayor in disguise, staging the raid for their elderly parents, who refuse to leave their farms for a retirement home in town. Ash and friends play along, pitfalls swallow most of the raiders, and the Diglett carry the rest away.
- AG155The Green GuardianOn a mission to rescue a Celebi, the Pokémon Ranger Solana scans the area with her Capture Styler, captures a Diglett and a Dugtrio that pop up, and has her Plusle give them a Helping Hand. Diglett burrows into the soft ground with Dig, opening a hole that takes Ash and friends underground on the way to Celebi.
- XY117Making Friends and Influencing Villains! On the way to Snowbelle City, a timid Shiny Phantump hides behind Bonnie when a wild Diglett pops up, followed by two more and a pair of Dugtrio. Ash and Serena reassure it that the newcomers only want to say hello, and once the moles head off, Phantump begins to relax, an early step towards learning that new Pokémon are worth meeting.
- SM035Currying Favor and Flavor!Hunting for a Miracle Seed for an Akala curry, Ash and Mallow wander into a maze of tunnels, and Ash drops straight into a pit dug by an Alolan Diglett, which attacks and chases the group out. Ash comes away holding one of its golden whiskers, and that single strand lets Rockruff sniff out the right way through while steering clear of the cave's Diglett.

Anime trivia
- Dig Those Diglett! was a big day for Team Rocket as well: Jessie's Ekans and James's Koffing evolved into Arbok and Weezing in the same episode, and were promptly washed away by a Diglett mudslide (EP031).
- In the Japanese version of Dig Those Diglett!, the foreman writes Diglett off as bugs and Gary has to set him straight: they are Mole Pokémon (EP031).
- Brock explains that Diglett plough the soil while Dugtrio plant the trees, but the animation shows them doing it the other way round (EP031).
- Gary once claimed that a Diglett can pull its head back underground faster than light. The English dub settles for the slightly more modest 'at the speed of light'.
- Team Rocket have built at least three Diglett-themed machines: the Super Diglett Mark 2, a hole-digger with a baseball bat attachment (EP142); the Diglett Supreme, which grabbed Pikachu until Brock's Ludicolo broke it (AG106); and a remote-controlled Robo Diglett that captured Heatran, only to end up in lava and be finished off by Heatran's Eruption (DP169).
- Diglett rancher Poncho is a nod to Clint Eastwood, and his Japanese name is Django. (EP114).
- In the original Japanese version of How Are You Gonna Keep 'Em Off of the Farm?, Goh's Rotom Phone shows a picture of a Diglett when he reads out Dugtrio's entry. The dub fixed the slip (JN052).
- In the anime, Alolan Diglett is coloured darker and warmer than its Kanto cousin, especially on its body and nose, matching its official artwork rather than the pre-Scarlet and Violet game models.
“Diglett. The movement of these Ground Pokémon can be easily detected by their tracks of upturned earth.”

Diglett in the movies
1 Pikachu short and 1 special featuring Diglett.
Diglett's film career has mostly been spent in the background, and only a couple of scenes give it anything to do. In the Pikachu short Meloetta's Moonlight Serenade a line of Diglett scoops Meowth and Wobbuffet out of a hole and passes them up to a Dugtrio, which promptly sends them blasting off. Their best part is in the Mystery Dungeon special Explorers of Time & Darkness, where the Diglett of Wigglytuff's Guild serve as its burglar alarm.

- PK24Meloetta's Moonlight Serenade (2012) · A line of wild Diglett, with a Dugtrio
Chasing a Berry across a steep hillside riddled with holes, Meowth and Wobbuffet tumble into yet another one. A line of Diglett carries them out through a tunnel at the foot of the ridge and hoists them up onto a Dugtrio, which sends them blasting off yet again. More Diglett are in the audience for Meloetta's concert. The short was shown in Japan with Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice.
TV specials
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness (2007)
In this special based on the Mystery Dungeon games, several Diglett are members of Wigglytuff's Guild. They act as the Guild's alarm system, raising the alert whenever an intruder sets foot inside. In Japanese they are voiced by Akio Suyama.

Diglett in the Pokémon TCG
43 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.
Diglett has been popping up in the card game since the very first packs. Keiji Kinebuchi's 30 HP mole surfaced in Japan's original Expansion Pack in October 1996 and in English Base Set in January 1999, and the species has stuck happily to that humble role ever since: a Basic Pokémon with no ex, GX or V card to its name, and a Common in every main set. What it lacks in power it makes up for in tricks, from Dig Under picking off a Pokémon anywhere on the field to Mine peeking at your opponent's next draw, while the Surprise Attack that Brock's Diglett introduced has been passed down to a long line of later cards. Alolan Diglett tunnelled in with Sun & Moon in 2017 as a Metal type with golden whiskers, and 2026's Ascended Heroes finally gave Team Rocket a Diglett of its own.
The fun of the art is spotting where Diglett pokes its head out. After early cards by Kinebuchi, Sumiyoshi Kizuki and Ken Sugimori, artists started giving it real places to surface: Floaroma Town in Platinum, Giovanni's Viridian Gym in Unbroken Bonds, the Diglett sculptures of Galar's Route 6 in Darkness Ablaze and the desert city of Cascarrafa in Obsidian Flames. Japan has its own curiosities, from a promo tucked into a 1998 rules guidebook to a regional Lucky Stadium starring Diglett in 2000, while Pokémon Rumble swapped paint for game graphics and Miki Tanaka returned 25 years after her 1998 promo to draw the 151 card. TCG Pocket keeps digging, bringing back art by Masako Yamashita, Tomokazu Komiya, Kyoko Umemoto and Megumi Mizutani and adding a Diglett's Cave Illustration Rare plus Shiny versions of both forms.
Cards to know
- Base Set 47/102 — Where it all began: Keiji Kinebuchi's 30 HP mole with Dig and Mud Slap, and on some early prints a Fighting symbol knocked on its side.
- Gym Challenge 67/132 (Brock's Diglett) — Brock's own Diglett gave the game Surprise Attack, a coin-flip jab that has since been handed down to a whole parade of later Pokémon.
- Asobikata promo (Japan) — A bonus card tucked into a 1998 how-to-play guidebook, with a Peck attack no Diglett could ever learn. In Japan's Pokémon Card GB2 on Game Boy you have to hunt for it in a chest in the GR Fighting Fort maze.
- Unbroken Bonds 85/214 — Diglett on Giovanni's home turf inside Viridian Gym, with an Ability that only kicks in when Giovanni's Exile sends it packing.
- Ascended Heroes 100/217 (Team Rocket's Diglett) — Team Rocket finally got a Diglett in 2026, and it keeps burrowing for as long as you flip heads, chewing through your opponent's deck one card at a time.
- Genetic Apex 238/226 (TCG Pocket) — Shinya Komatsu's Illustration Rare takes you to the mouth of Diglett's Cave on Route 11, the tunnel that made the species famous.

Diglett in manga, books & other media
From the earliest manga to story books and songs.
Diglett made its manga debut in late 1996 in Kosaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters, where Clefairy and Pikachu treat the Diglett of Diglett's Cave as a game of whack-a-mole and Giovanni later sends out seven of them to rig his own TV contest. In Pokémon Adventures, Red's Diglett lasts about as long as it takes a shape-shifting Eevee to turn into Vaporeon, a group of wild Diglett bring Red's battle with Bruno to a halt in a chapter named after them, and Pearl's Digler bursts out of the ground to take on Team Galactic and later helps shove Dialga into Palkia. Shu catches one in Pokémon: Yeah! I Got Pokémon!, and trains it with whack-a-mole, naturally.
On the bookshelf, Diglett throws its own party in the picture book Diglett's Birthday Party, gets mistaken for a sausage by a hungry Snorlax and trips up Pikachu in Pikachu's Day. It is named in the English Pokérap, digs its way through a Pokémon Christmas carol and once popped out of a hole at a Pokémon Snap attraction on Australia's Gold Coast.

Diglett trivia
Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Diglett such a fan favourite.
What’s in a name?
Diglett is a perfectly simple name for a perfectly simple idea: 'dig' plus '-let', the little suffix you'll find in piglet and droplet, so it's literally a small digger. Its Japanese name, ディグダ (Digda), comes from the same English word and may also nod to Dig Dug, Namco's 1982 arcade game about tunnelling underground. Digda was even Diglett's working English name while Red and Green were in development, and it's still the name Diglett uses in German. Elsewhere the mole theme takes over: in French it's Taupiqueur, from taupe (mole) and marteau-piqueur (pneumatic drill), while its Chinese name, 地鼠, means 'ground rat' – the everyday word for a mole.
Design origins
Diglett was designed by Game Freak's Shigeki Morimoto, the artist also behind Mankey, Tauros and Mew. In Sun and Moon he turns up as a character in the Game Freak office in Heahea City, sharing stories about his old designs, and Diglett turns out to be a childhood creation: 'You know Diglett, right? It's actually basically just a character that I had made up when I was a little kid. I even drew up a flip-book featuring it then!' The design seems to borrow from the plastic moles of Whac-A-Mole arcade machines, endlessly bobbing up out of their holes, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon is in on the joke: at full health a Diglett pleads, 'Please don't whack me on the head!' Alolan Diglett draws on Hawaii's volcanoes instead. Its three golden hairs may be inspired by Pele's hair, fine threads of volcanic glass spun out near Hawaiian eruptions; the dark soil around it suggests the black-sand beaches found near volcanoes; and its Steel typing may reflect the magnetic, iron-rich black sand that collects in such deposits. In its key art, Sun and Moon concept art and HOME model its body and nose are a darker, warmer brown than the original's, though the core-series models before Scarlet and Violet – and Pokémon GO – kept the familiar Kanto colours.

Did you know?
- In a way, Diglett predates Pokémon: its designer, Shigeki Morimoto, explains in Sun and Moon that it began as a character he made up as a little kid – he even drew a flip-book starring it.
- Nobody has ever seen what's under the ground. The Pokémon Stadium Pokédex says Diglett's real size remains a mystery, and a letter in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon lists Diglett's feet among seven great Pokémon mysteries – alongside how Arbok's pattern changes and what's inside Forretress's shell.
- A Diglett in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red & Blue Rescue Team does mention having feet after the first mission to Mt. Steel – it just never shows them.
- Its moves hint at more hidden secrets: Diglett can learn Scratch, Hone Claws and Slash, and Alolan Diglett learns Metal Claw, so there must be claws down there somewhere.
- With 10 base HP and 25 base Defense, Diglett has the lowest HP and Defense of any Ground-type – and among every Pokémon, only Shedinja has less HP.
- Since Generation V, Diglett and Dugtrio simply fade onto the screen when they're sent into battle.
- Diglett can't jump in HeartGold and SoulSilver's Pokéathlon, so in Hurdle Dash it simply digs underneath the hurdles.
- Diglett and Dugtrio are immune to the move Telekinesis – you can't lift something that's stuck in the ground – and the same goes for Sandygast and Palossand.
- Generation VI's Hurricane animation doesn't lift Diglett off the ground, and when it's hit by the Z-Move Supersonic Skystrike, it's carried into the sky still embedded in a chunk of earth.
- On X and Y's Pokédex comparison screen, a Flying-type that tries to lift Diglett or Dugtrio has to give up.
- Diglett is #001 in the Mountain Kalos Pokédex in X and Y.
- Pokémon Stadium lists Acid as a move Diglett can learn, even though it can't actually learn it.
- In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Diglett and Dugtrio are the only Pokémon you'll see along the Grand Underground's tunnels, yet neither can be found in its Pokémon Hideaways.
- Diglett shares its Mole Pokémon category with Dugtrio and Drilbur.
- Paldea's Wiglett looks uncannily like Diglett but isn't related at all – a case of two species adapting to similar lives. That makes Diglett and Dugtrio the only Pokémon with both regional forms and convergent lookalikes.
- At 0.2 m, Alolan Diglett ties with Klefki and Meltan as the shortest Steel-type Pokémon.
